Facebook is the largest social media and social network with more than two billion users all around the world. But how is Facebook doing in Iran?
A little overview on the size of Facebook
Two billion monthly active users make Facebook the largest social media/network app in terms of logged-in users, above YouTube’s 1.5 billion, WeChat’s 889 million, Twitter’s 328 million and Snapchat’s estimated 255 million. Apart from YouTube, only Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp have more than 1 billion users. Instagram might soon join that club as it recently passed 700 million users. You can check the monthly users of these apps in the image below.
Facebook daily active users
The monthly active users are normally way more than the daily active users. In the case of Facebook, it’s more than half of the monthly active users. However, this number is still really big, almost 1.3 billion users. You can check the daily active users of Facebook between 2015 and 2017 in the image below.
Facebook revenue by region
And the last part, before talking about Facebook’s Iranian users is the revenue that each region generates for this company. As you can guess US and Canada are on the top of the list, meaning that the revenue generated by these two countries are almost equal to the revenue generated by Asia, Europe and the rest of the world (roughly 300 million dollars short). According to Internet World Stats (IWS), there are only 76 million Facebook users in the Middle East which would place in the “Rest of World” category in the image below.
Facebook is the second most widely used social network in Iran
TechRasa and NazarBazaar have conducted a questionnaire to find out about the state of Internet and social media usage in Iran. Almost 3,707 Iranians from the age of 18 to 65 have answered our questionnaire; of which 2,829 were men and 878 were women. According to this research, if we exclude Telegram and WhatsApp which are messaging apps with some characteristics of social media, Facebook would be the second most widely used social network/media in Iran after Instagram. However, the amount of time that Iranians put on Facebook is way less than the amount that they put on Instagram or Telegram.
Facebook was blocked and unblocked by the Iranian government two times before 2009. However, after 2009, it was blocked permanently. Since then, Iranian users of Facebook have been using the services using VPNs (Virtual Private Network). Facebook currently has Persian as one of its supported languages.
Iran has more Facebook users than any country in the Middle East, with 17.2 million users
Regarding the number of Facebook users in Iran, there is no official statistics from Facebook or the Iranian government. Since the app is banned by the domestic android markets in the country as well, we can’t even check the number of downloads from these markets. However, according to the Internet World Stats (IWS), Iran has more than 17.2 million Facebook users as of June 2016. This number accounts for more than 21% of the population.
