According to Statistical Center of Iran, 13.5 million households (55.5%) have access to internet. Of this number, 7 million households (51.9%) have access to fixed high-speed internet connection and 10.7 million households (79%) have access to wireless high-speed internet.
Iranians are becoming more and more involved with web-based apps and services everyday. This consumer behavior change is directly related to internet infrastructure in the country and the changes that the country has seen in this field. Today 40% of the world population is connected to the internet, while in 1995, it was less than 1%. Thanks to the fast developments in Iran’s mobile networks, Iranians are now getting faster and more stable internet connections just like the rest of them world.
Latest statistics show that 13.9 million households (57.4%) have access to computers at home. Of this number 8.7 million households (36%) have access to desktop computers, 4.1 million (16.9%) to laptops and 5.1 million to tablets devices. 64.8% of urban households and 36.1% of rural households have access to computers at their home. Considering Iran’s 79 million population, 56.6 million of Iranians are using mobile devices while 54.4 million are 6 years old or more. 42.8 million of mobile users in Iran reside in urban areas and 13.6 million are inhabitants of rural areas of the country.
According to this statistics, mobile penetration (amongst users with the age of 6 and older) is 77.9%, while for urban and rural areas this number is 80.5% and 70.8% respectively. Comparing Iran’s mobile penetration to previous years, this number has seen a 24% growth since the year 1389 (6 years ago).
According to this report in 2015 (Persian year 1394), Iran has 32.8 million internet users and the internet penetration has reached to 41.6%. Internet penetration for the users with the age of 6 and older is also 45.3%, while in urban and rural areas this number is 52.1% and 26.6% respectively. As stated by this report, internet penetration in Iran has seen a 51% growth since 2013 (Persian year 1392) where internet penetration was only 30%.
Use of Social Media Platforms
Official stats by Statistical Center of Iran indicates that 21.3 million Iranians are a member of a social media platform such as Facebook and Twitter. Of this number, 11.8 million are men and 9.4 million are women. Based on this statistics, professional networking platforms such as Linkedin have over 981 thousand users. Of this number 584 thousand are men and 396 thousand are women.
